I have both Carprog and AK90, if you have EWS4.3 then AK90 is by far better.

You can check this web site for system before working on the car:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do?lang=en

1. last 7 from VIN
2. Search
3. Browse parts
4. Vehicle electrical system
5. Control units, Modules, Sensors, Relays - - - EWS control unit

For EWS systems (E36, E39, E46, E53, E85, E38) I use AK90. For MCU mask 2L86D (EWS4.x) if you do not want to solder, there is a solderless adaptor from UK which can be used with Xprog-M.

For CAS the best way today I believe is the BMW Multi tool. I already also have a clone of BMW Explorer, but the software version is old and it is only good for making keys on CAS which has not been updated. Downgrading CAS is not a good way to go.
