Golf 4 GT TDi PD130

Postby dubnostics » Thu Dec 06, 2012 4:17 pm

Hi guys,

So I'm new-ish to all this but I have been looking into mapping and already have a fair bit of kit to do so:
WinOls
VAGEDC15P+
KWP2000+
Galleto
VCDS (VAG-COM)
etc.

I have a Golf mk4 PD130 and it has previously been mapped by Black Code with no issues, really happy with the service but it's not how I want to leave it and I want to learn my way around on my own car.
I have fitted a PD150 turbo (Can't remember Garrat numbers) and it has a full 3 1/2" Milltek turbo back system on along with a FMIC, the map is currently the PD130 one so obviously I'm getting no gains from the new turbo so this is where I want to get going. I have read the flash and have the map in WinOls, I've mapped out the EGR as it doesnt exist on my car and its from here I am going to start trying to get stuck in.
I have been reading lots of info online and I have also been talking to some friends who have done file writing in the past but there is no learning like practice, I know what some of you may be thinking; "be careful, don't play with the unknown" but I am very cautious and I would not write a file I am not confident with and that has correct checksum.

My main question really is, now that I have the file loaded, with potential maps found and whatnot, a) how do I identify which map does what? Is this where Damos/Map Packs come in and b) how do you learn how much you can change values?
Obviously I know this isn't a one line answer and a lot of it is through years of experience so pointers would be good.

I also want to create an economy map for the car as I do a lot of motorway miles (around 1,000 per week) so this would be useful too.

Any help is much appreciated and I will do my best to return any favours!

open your file in VAGEDC15P+
it shows you the main maps without using damos or map packs.
great programm for beginners and has all functions you need at your project.

there is still some engine knowledge affordable to change values in the maps.

for a economy tune, the only thing I have in mind is to start injection earlier in low rpms.
this probably will cause better efficiancy.

kind regards

1. datalog the car....rpm maf map iat
2. calculate VE.
3. get a compressor map for your turbo.
4. based on ve find safe boost vs rpm using the compressor map.
5. decide what AFR you are going to use vs RPM.
6. Calculate what fuel you need at the MAF vs RPM output by the turbo using the AFR vs rpm.
7. Fill in the blanks for the lower rpm and adjust all limiters to suit.

Providing engine and exhaust temps are ok of course nad the engine components can survive such fuel/torque.

Thanks for the help guys, I have been playing and have it mapped and running my own code so far, I know it's not running spot on and I suspect the fueling is off a bit so I'm reverting back to save any potential damage.

A few more questions if I may, @JTT how does injecting earlier make the engine more efficient?

When people use an 'off the shelf' map for a car, how do they get around the immo? From what I understand the file and immo wouldn't match up and thus car not start? I'm not going to use one but was curious.

Thanks Guys

If you inject too late the power is being added when the piston is already on its way down.
If you inject too early you lose power and overload the rods and crank.
It seems a lot of OEM retard the SOI to reduce noise and lower nox.
But this sacrifices economy and power.

hello I am French, I have my mk4 tdi 130 remap asz engine, and I simply returned all the settings it based on a file's original seat cupra tdi 160, and the result is perfect, power perfect, I hardly smoke develops around 165/170 hp and I made my reprogramming using ecm and Galetto in 1 hour, cordially

Sounds interesting. Where did you find the mapping of the cupra? I've got an Ibiza FR so the mapping of the Cupra would be very helpful for me.

you cannot simply jsut copy every map from a cupra 160 tdi. different injectors, turbo, intercooler, pipework etc. Madness!
