What tools can be used to flash a 2004 Volvo V70 2.5T? Also, what would be the most convenient settings for this engine, it has B5254T2 engine with automatic gearbox, front wheel drive, 209 bhp/330 Nm original. It has 188k kilometres on it, and as it's a 2.5T with low pressure turbo, one can't get much more out of it than 240 bhp/385 Nm, or so I've read. Otherwise the gearbox would fail, or bent rods etc. which I do not want. The commercial softwares are a bit expensive, so I thought why not learn everything myself.

How much will the hardware/software cost? What hardware would be most capable of modifying more than just this car (other make/model), as this car most likely won't be my last one. :)

Easiest (If ME7) is to use Galletto cable in boot mode VAG 400 or 800 (whichever chip you got). You can desolder and read in programmer.

Automatics have 1st and 2nd gear limited torque. Hard to find, so when you tune, you wont be seeing full boost until 3rd gear.
But they make decent power with a good map. 240ish HP sounds about right. Torque can be higher than 380Nm. Gearbox will be fine.
For bending rods it is necessary to tune low rpm and boost correctly
