Well this is a difficult one to answer since everyone will have their own opinion on this.

Someone may think that since they paid say £12,000 for a car why shouldn't they get the max out of it, instead of paying a further £2k or £3k to get the next model up and get the extra 30hp from it. So with remapping when done correctly can achieve you more HP and low end Torque which results in better fuel consumption and a better, faster toy.

Downsides are obviously mechanical tolerances. Car's are made with a certain HP and torque figure as to give good relaibility whilst still trying to give some degree of performance. So pushing the car further and harder to get more out of it will ultimately make something fail sooner than it would if standard. Of course there are good conservative remaps out their that still provide good gains and still respect the limits of the stock hardware.

Personally I think any Turbo Diesel car can yield a further 15-20% performance and still maintain a fairly reliable car. Plus with any tuned car regular servicing and check-ups are recommended more frequently, including injector cleaning for the higher output cars.

Hope this helps and this is my view only
