Possible you wrong do boot mode. Right is:
Connect pin 24 29f400 to GND.
Power ON ECU.
After 3-5 sec disconnect pin 24 from GND.
Connect Galleto socket.
Start Galleto program.
Select AUDI.
In Driver go to bottom and find AUDI WV ME7.x.x 29f400BB PIN 24 FLASH A MASSA
Press ECU DATA button and check answer.
If you see "Boot mode inactive" you have Galleto USB driver trouble. Often this is conflict Galleto USB driver and drivers from other program for virtual USB COM port. Tray to uninstall all other USB COM drivers.
If you see EEPROM ident all OK.
First read flash few time and binary compare files for check connection stability. If OK - you can write.

mr. alex_sk is right, this should work.
If not than you really need programmer.

I thought the BB chip was the only one with boot mode capability, the BT didn't have boot mode?

What I am curious about is if that is correct, can you fit a BB chip instead of BT to enable boot capability?

That said if you are worried about future access a socket is probably easier to fit if you are soldering at all.

Hmmm

If the pinout is the same and specs are equal maybe it works,
But like ecuedit said, every chip has bootmode, just need to know how to enable it.

I have tryed but no Luck yet.

I'm sure I heard someone was successful with recovering an EDC15C2 PSA HDi am29f400bt with a KWP2000 and a Vitara protocol or something... not sure if they triggered boot mode by grounding the appropriate pin on the flash or what, it was vague and in broken English on a forum four or five years ago now...

I still think if you have the ECU in bits and are bench flashing it, and attaching grounds with the appropriate connection to pins etc, without any sure knowledge it's gonna work, isn't it just as easy to de-solder and socket at that point any way?

Hmmm

If boot mode does not help, then take off the chip.

Shouldn't boot mode always work unless the flash is damaged? It's my understanding that boot mode is a function of the processor and is a special mode that allows the upload of a very small flashing application into the processor's internal memory which then executes and behaves like a proxy between the flasher and the flash memory.

Yes, that's correct.
If you take off the chip, you can boot the ECU as well without the chip.

Taking off the chip and putting it into programmer is the last try...

So as Trumps said, if the boot mode doesn't work then there is probably something really wrong with the flash memory itself... but how would that happen just from a bad write of 1's and 0's?

Any way, I have two EDC15C2 from PSA to fix in the next week, one had a ZIP file written (oops), other stopped at 44% write, but still communicated for reading (I have the 44% read file) with a Galletto...

Someone tried fixing the latter with KESS via OBD (not boot mode), but that made it not even want to communicate any more.

Will report back if boot mode saves both these using the techniques shown here (probably using official MPPS)

Worst case I'll just be de-soldering/socketing I think.
