I´m no expert, hope I could help.

You will get a a dtc/mil. Top get that taken care off:
Their are a couple of people here that talk about a EGR switch and put it to 00000
Other talk about egr hysteresis maps. These are located ahead of the EGR maps (cant find mine).
The best way to test that you have been successful is to drive the car and log with vag-com (VCDS). Engine measuring block 003 will show you EGR specified and EGR actual. These should both read constantly at 850 or what ever value you set.

EGR OFF in one byte set to 0

lot of solution is not EGR off but EGR CLOSE it need a working EGR valve ....
