The clutch - How much?

Postby nvg » Mon Mar 10, 2014 9:54 pm

Hello all,
I always look for an answer and never find it clear enough.
How do you decide what is the safe tolerance for the clutch?
Is there any data specified from the clutch manufacturer?
Or, we just add 10, 20 or 30% to the stock value?
How the manufacturer choose the right one(clutch) when the car has been designed? There should be some data somewhere, but I never saw it in the net.
I know that the torque, wich clutch can handle decreases with the increasing milleage, so lets talk only about new ones.
I have seen a lot of statements like "This is too much for this clutch" or "This clutch can handle xxxNm with no problems", but can we be sure of something at all? There should be a theory on the question.
Please share your knowledge!

Regards!

...when we test in a 500nm car and the clutch doesn't slip it handles at least 500nm

haha, exactly!

Some say my clutch can handle up to 350 Nm while stock engine has 330 Nm / 360 Nm during overboost.

I am running it much over 400 Nm now (will see tomorrow on the dyno) - no slip. But if the torque limiter is too high around 1800/2000 rpm, I can feel vibrations at WOT - I guess this is the flywheel expressing its pain, so I try to avoid this kind of setup.

If you have a single mass flywheel you feel much more vibrations that a dual mass flywheel. In other side, i prefer SMF to DMF just because its much more effective and less expensive to achieve
