Hi everyone,

I'm a complete noob on this site but was wondering what are the laws surrounding ECU tuning/remapping/flashing etc? The reason I ask is that I enjoy fiddling around with things myself and I am supercharging my car soon but I am told that I am unable to reflash the ECU with the software myself. My ECU is a siemens MS45 and I was originally told that I can buy the software and an OBD cable to allow me to flash it to my ECU, however it turns out that I now only have the option of sending it off to a tuning speiclaist for the work to be done.

What I would like to know is that when I purchase the software to be installed on to my ECU (including the correct maps to suit the supercharger), do I have access to these maps so that I can tweak them myself when I say decide to install a hotter cam or decat the manifold? I dont want to pay good money over and over again to have the ECU reflashed for any minor mods, I woulod rather do it myself. Is this legal? If you pay for something then do you own it and can do what you want with it? I realise that many tuners dont want their hard work ending up in the wrong hands but do I have the legal rights to view and making changes to the map myself?

I have looked into a BDM100 and it appears that I will be able to read and write to the ECU using this device but how once i have the tuned file can modify it myself and ensure that it installs correctly on my ECU?
