BMW X5 E53 3.0D Bosch EDC16C31

Hi

Dose anyone here have experiance with these car/ecu's?

I have had my last two diesels tuned with "pro tunes", or as I guess I have learned later a "simple" 10-20% increase map.

I could of course just go too a pro tune shop, and get it tuned on a dyno by a professional, but befor I do that, I would like to know more of what they do, and how they do it. And also be able to do rough tunes myself with road loging to get a consept of what they are doing.

My first goal is to be able to remove the DPF and EGR systems from my ECU by myself, and understand what I am doing.

So far Im finding it hard to get a good grip of all the information floating around, as I havent really found a good "beginners guid".

I have WinOLS demo up and runing, and have started trying to figure out how to detect maps in the hex code, but not geting much out of it. I think I am able to recognise some tables, but im not sure of anything.

And I cant download any literature here befor I have made 3 usefull posts, I am going to use this second post to ask for beginners directions and tips for reading material and guids worth taking a look at.

TLTR I know, but thanks in advance.

Search for the "tuning guide" hopefully you have enough posts to download it once you find it. There is one for the EDC15 ecu that should help with some of the generalities. Also there is a guide for basic WinOLS that will probably help you get more out of it. here is a link for that: https://sites.google.com/site/vagecumap/winols-guide. Actually there is alot more on that site that is interesting, do some browsing on the left hand menu.

Good Luck!

Hehe if it were that simple, 10-20 increase of maps :P. Everything has its purpose and and should change accordingly . Search the forum about egr removal guide, should be easy to find. About DPF that is another problem, switches or emulation.

First try to read how a diesel engine works in your case the common rail injection.

Then try to get the hang of winols, create maps, apply factors and offsets, then decide what map is responsable for.

Also be aware one wrong move can damage your engine!

And as said above, search the forum for edc16 tuning guide, should give you a good starting point !

Thanks for the suggestions, I will look in to the "tuning guide", and the vagecumap page I did find a few days ago and have read it. Good read that one.

Thank you ^^

I think I can say that im a few 100 forum posts past the "simple" illusion, as for the workings of the engine I got ~ covered. Not an expert by far, but I have a good general understanding of combustion engines.

So im in the phase of trying to figure out winols for reading/finding tunes, and geting the as you said factors/offsets etc correct to find the maps/functions. And I would not mind geting the hang of tunerpro, but its here im stuck atm, and I want this bit under more controle befor I want to try any tuning or changing. So far I have dl'ed an X5 original file, and I'm scratching my head daily, and reading my eye's bloody to figure this stuff out. Im abit of a slow learner, but I can be quit stuborn, so I will figure this stuff out some time.. I hope..

Thanks again for the tips from the both of you, and I will keep reading. Interesting stuff this is :ugeek:
