ECU opened and prepared for conformation of CPU number ;)

Thank you for posting the pictures!
For reference, these are pictures of my ECU from 406 2.2 HDI that admin kindly helped to unmount and disassemble :P.. Thanx again!!
Here are the numbers from the box.

So far I have seen 2 different DC15C2 CPU chips. Searching the net I've both identified them as Siemens/Infienon C167CR-4RM CPUs.

Bosch Siemens/Infineon
name name
B59388 SAK-C167CR-4RM (GA)
B59233 SAK-C167CR-4RM (FA)

FA and GA stand for chip revision.

Can someone confirm the findings?

Infineon kindly provides datasheets for their products. SAK-C167CR-4RM CPUs are part of C166 16-bit processor family. At a glance C167 is newer and has some nifty features compared to C166, but at the core it is C166 instruction set compatible.

C167 come in several flavors (size of internal ROM, RAM, etc) so it is important that we identify the correct one that lives inside the EDC15C2 ;)

Code: Select all
1. C167CR-LM     Version with PLL, 2 KByte XRAM, CAN module
2. C167CR-4RM    Version with PLL, 2 KByte XRAM, 32 KByte ROM, CAN module
3. C167CR-16RM   Version with PLL, 2 KByte XRAM, 128 KByte ROM, CAN module
4. C167SR-LM     Version with PLL, 2 KByte XRAM

.. nice job with he mono fonts .. ;)

I'm betting my money on number two.

Here is the C167 datasheet..

Next we need to know what the instruction set for C166 is.
Along with that we have to learn some additional instructions that are C167 specific, too. :ugeek:

Time to update this stuff.

hinkxx wrote:I think I have the answer to this now.
They just number the damn things in sequence.. single SW number can be found in combination with many HW numbers, I'm not sure if other around also holds true.

I've compiled a document that focuses on 2.2 HDI EDC15C2 in PSA and my understanding so far goes like this:
HW and SW numbers are incremented in sequence, but they not seem to be related to a specific car manufacturer (so the claim about the manufacturer specific number block is probably false).
As a rule of thumb these SW - HW combinations follow in sequence, but there are exceptions.
We probably have not seen all HW and SW releases out there, even for a given model.
Some ECUs, with matching HW number and close SW number could be interchanged.
Some ECUs are not available in Roberts store anymore, but they got the proper replacement ECUs in that case - different HW and SW ECU that "fits" the car.
It seems that it is not important where the ECU is fitted (manufacturer and car model vise).. you can find the "same" ECU is used by different manufacturers.
In my research I've noticed that as the time passes by and cars are produced, new versions of ECUs are made, HW and SW changes are made on car and/or ECU and consequently SW and SW numbers get incremented.
Looking at the document you can notice that there are "periods" where ECUs for a given manufacturer changed more frequently than others  this might relate to model and later face-lift release times.
Also I've tried to back and forth with HW numbers as I saw fit to find all known ECU HW numbers for 2.2 HDI EDC15C2 on PSA.

Information was compiled from various sources and I must there were not many conflicts in the data I've gathered.

Document is not a complete reference but has some links where I got the info. I tried to cross check each HW number at some point but I gave up, since I think I got my questions answered ;)

Nice research here ;)
I have a 2.0 HDi and all maps and things are in the same place as they are in the admin's dump of 2.2 HDi.
It's interesting..
I'll open un my ecu one of these days and post some pictures
