Golf MK3 TDI 1z engine - Help

Postby GT TDI » Tue Oct 15, 2013 12:31 am

Hello everyone.

First question is: What is the code of an ECU for a Golf 3 TDI 1z engine (66Kw), or how can i search it written in the unit.

Second question is: After some searching on the internet, i realised that to properly tune my ECU, i need to de-solder the two chips from my ECU. Chip HHH and LLL, because the information on engine management is stored in and read from those two chips at the same time, right? That means i will have to install a socket to make easier the process of programming the chips, right?

Third questions are: Is Vag Suite compatible with that kind of old hardware? (Two chips) and can it split the maps in two for the HHH and LLL? How is the cable/hardware to program those chips?

I rellay appreciate your help!

Hey mate

I've a friend that had one mk3 golf tdi and to remap, he choose to swap the ecu from the gttdi version (90kw) because is easier to remap and the diferences between those 2 engines are minimum, only the map is diferent.

With this new ECU from the gttdi, he had arround 150hp with only a remap and turbo upgraded to VNT.

Hope i helped you ;)

Hello

All help is welcome. I have heard about the change to the ECU of the AFN engine, and i would appreciate a variable geometry turbo instead of mine. Unfortunately, the current ECU is not capable of controlling such turbos.
I also heard about a "dawes device" for when the ECU is blind to that kind of geometry, so it's controlled mechanically by vacuum, but the level of efficiency is not the same as an electronically controlled geometry, and it's an option i'm not considering.

So my two choices are:

- Going for a fixed geometry turbo, designed for higher pressures with the current ECU (aiming to 130/140hp maximum) and keep the usual lag as a downside. This is the option that i assume to be the less time consuming, since i just have to change the maps and adjust them to the new turbo and injectors.

- Going for an ECU change and adapt it to the current+new hardware of the car.

I'm also aware that the ECU change will cause problems with the immo. Is there any way around how i can fix the problem: i.e: resetting the new ECU immobilizer codes to make it all work together?

Some birds told me that the immoobilizer of the ECU its a contact, if i remember, i think is fuse nº13  You take it off and you can put any ECU you want!! :)

I didn't know that. But i'm going to keep it in mind, in case i choose to go for an ECU change. Thanks for the help!

ECU change you mean remap or changing another ECU from another golf to yours? If is it the last choice, you can do with the VAG-COM

By ECU change, i mean putting the ECU of another car. Like.. putting the ECU piece from a 110hp AFN into my golf.
What exactly do you mean it's possible to do with vag-com?

I think that i'll stick with the same non-variable geometry idea for a while, just changing injectors for some Race 520's or the ones from a 2.5TDI and turbo for one that can handle higher pressures, and properly adjust everything by doing a remap.
I'm still learning how to remap, so it may take a while to get it all together. I believe that the fact that the turbo is controlled by a wastegate (non-variable geometry), makes remapping my ECU easier than remapping an ECU capable of controlling a geometry.

With vag-com you can recode the ECU to the new one and it should fit. if isnt at first keep trying and it will fit. Race 520 are nozzles, not injectors. If i'm not in error, you can put Race 520 in 2.5 tdi injectors to even better performance. You should increase the diameter of injection pump piston to give you more fuel, calibrate the injection pump to better flow.

VNT is better than non-variable geometry because you can have better control with the ECU and have almost always boost. Should think in a 1749vb from pd130 or a bigger one if you want a rocket golf.

All mods that i say, with a good remap, 200 hp, or a bit more ;)

I didn't know it's possible to recode the ECU with vag-com, but that's good news. I might reconsider using a VNT.
Sorry for my mistake about the injectors. I thought the Race 520 were the whole injectors. Since they are the nozzles, i would like to know if they can be adapted to the stock injectors, but maybe the flow through the injectors themselves is not sufficient for that kind of nozzles, and i'll need to go for bigger ones like the ones from 2.5TDI.

About the diameter of the pump piston, i was originally thinking about going to 11mm, so it could pump more fuel to feed bigger injectors. I abandoned the idea because someone told me that at this point, the pump is not the restriction for a bigger flow, since it can feed fuel up to over 200hp (like he did on his own golf). That person told me to think about a 1749va turbo. I saw that in order to apply it, i need an exhaust manifold from an AFN, with properly adjusted flange and downpipe. Maybe i'll need an intake from a pd150, to get some more room for the turbo.
The friend who suggested me the turbo, currently has 220hp+ on his golf (originally AFN), but i guess i wouldn't go for so high levels of power, since the engine is originally 90hp only, and already made 320 000Km, and i'm afraid it can't take the power without other kind of modifications.
I'm just aiming to reach 140hp, going through the minor possible changes, and with the most apropriate hardware.
In case i apply the 16bit ECU from the AFN, do you know if it's possible to make it work with the 1z wiring harness? Thanks for your help

If you want you Golf 3 be more faster - nozzle max 280um, race camshaft, turbo from some benzin engine like Delta Integrale and intercooler from Fiat Ducato and remap! My Golf 3 GT TDI is with remap ecu, race camshaft and nozzle 210um and when i`m in 2nd with 1400-1500 rpm and hit na accelerator the tyres burn..... :)
