Maps tuned:
Torque limiter, Smoke limiter, EGR OFF, Target Boost, Boost limiter,Iniection duration 00,01,02, Soi 70c 80c and 90c.
I drive at Sea level.
Thanks

Obviously VW have made different maps for SOI dependent on the engine temperature and as you can see, generally they start the injection period earlier as the temperature gets colder. This is because the fuel ignites slower at cold temperatures so they need to have it burning a little sooner to make up for this. The SOI is also more advanced as the engine revs increase and this is again to allow time for the burn to take place and actually "keep up" with the speed of the piston, the idea being that the fuel is actually alight by the time the piston reaches top dead centre. Ok then, another reason to advance the SOI is to allow a longer period of time for the injector to inject more fuel, if the software is modified for this reason, any SOI mods should match up with similar mods to the duration tables but also care should be taken not to start the injection too early as the fuel could be well alight while the piston is still approaching top dead centre and if this occurs a very high pressure "explosion" will occur that pushes the piston the wrong way to begin with and can cause damage/create noise etc.
It can also be noticed there is a large block where the SOI all takes place at 15 degrees before top dead centre. My belief is that as the turbo is off boost, VW have advanced the SOI in order to allow what would be a slow burn given the lack of boost. It can also be noticed that at lower fuel requests and low RPM the SOI actually takes place after TDC. My belief is that VW have done this to allow for a quiet tick over and also to allow a very late burn in order to keep the catalytic converter heated in these conditions. Im sure a couple of degrees added here would improve throttle response and fuel consumption during slow driving, i have noticed that adding a couple of degrees cures the sometimes lumpy tickover of this engine. Im guessing from your post that you know how the ecu selects which duration maps it uses dont you? :?:
