EDC 15P GOLF IV GT TDI ARL

Postby doublefacy » Mon Dec 09, 2013 11:25 pm

hi,
I am new to this world of ECU tuning and I would like to learn.
I have GOLF IV GT TDI with ARL engine code. Autodata shows that it has EDC-15P ECU.
What exactly the letter P for ECU model means?

I would like to ask if anyone knows any good link for learning to remap EDC-15 ECUs.
Want to know how exactly the calculations are done and which maps needs to be changed to gain some
performance and how to determine the max value of each map!

Which software you would suggest me to use to practice considering I am totally new to all this!
I installed WinOLS and loaded file that I found on internet for my car. So far I am able to find more or less all the maps
by hex addressees, but that' s where I stop with my current knowledge :(

Was wondering if someone could help me with some guidance of how to change those map tables as I assume you can' t just increase all the data by let' s say 5% and hope you get that kind of performance gain! I know that I need to find out some info about my engine first like like what' s the maximum boost that turbo can provide etc. Is there any link or source where I could get all this information.

I will really appreciate any help,

Cheers,

Edgar

hi,

I got the access to learning materials and I looked through some tutorials.
I still got some questions.
Maybe I missed, but I didn't find exactly explanation for the offset and factor. Just from other people post I got felling that they are very important. Like I checked in winols for different maps and mostly offset is 0. What exactly that 0 means? Someone on forum said that it's kind of offset from start address. Then I wonder what' s start address- is it address of map? And if so do they ever use to be anything other then 0 and if so , why?
Same goes for factor, mostly for original maps it' s either 1 or 0.01. Would appreciate if someone could help me understand them completely!

Another question is about table size - when I do my changes and in most case they might go out of original map range. In those tutorials people suggest to either take out one of column and shift all data and insert new column at the end which would cover my new value or simply use the last column and update it' s range! I was wondering if the table size is fixed and how ECU reads it? Like if I instead of replacing column would insert an extra new column. I could imagine that it might overlap with other data if the table size is fixed and after the table that I am changing might come next table and for each table there is limited memory addresses. But I just wanted to know if there was free space for new column , would ECU recognize it and read or it' s set up to read exact amount of columns?

Reading suggestion for new re-mappers who might not completely understand what they doing and still learning- like me :) I came across info that suggests to use turbo gauge to monitors boost levels so to protect my turbo as software might lag for reading and it might be too late to do anything about it when software starts to warn you. My question is - If I have golf mkiv gt tdi 150BHP , what kind of gauge should I need? Cause guy on one of tutorials actually talked about my kind of car and the table shows it might reach 2650 millibars which is I guess 2.65 bars and limiter is set to 2.7 bars . So my guess is I should use gauge that supports these values which would be 3 bar gauge - is that right? Cause weird is that most of the gauges on ebay goes only up to 2 or 2.5 bars and if I want 3 bars it already labeled as sports performance gauge and is quite expensive.

Does anyone know any good software or site where I could find info about my car' s parts like what exact turbo model it has and what injectors etc. I tried autodata , but no such info there. Haven't really tried to search google a lot and I believe I can get it there , but it it always the place where everybody searches for car's information?

I am sorry if some of questions sounds silly.

Thanks,

Edgar

May be you can start with vag-com and make some logs of your car.
You can search for a winols manual and there is an EDC15 tunning guide also.
Turbocompressors is a worth reading subject.

It takes time to put all the bricks together.

thanks for advice.
Will check out WinOLS manual.
I just found my mistake on turbo boost pressure values in table - it consist of 1 bar atmospheric pressure + actual turbo pressure. So I actually need gauge that can show pressure up to 2 bars not 3 as I had assumed!
Every day I find something new :)

Double fancy, did you manage to find out info out about the arl engine . I know that things like compressor maps will be needed for the turbo, max boost pressure that can be ran and Injector flow rates but was wondering if you could point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated !

Arl turbo is good for 1.6bar, you can push it more in the mid range to get more of a torque spike if you like that sort of thing but depends how well your clutch and turbo will last.

Standard turbo will not out flow Arl injectors

From reading many forums, keeping boost levels low, mine drop to standard at 4000rpm at high revs will not stress the turbo or overflow the turbo. We'll it shouldn't do...

I found a bin for ARL named patrick-bora and is already tuned. I will try to post few printscreens. I don't know if is ok to post the bin here because I'm not the owner. Is possible to be on the download section.
