4HX: 2.2HDi engine code
full-multiplex:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiplexing, in short, multiplexing makes carrying of information from different sources on a single channel possible by polling one source at a time with a fast rate. This increases the transfer rate of the system while decreasing the number of wires
pre-multiplex or part-multiplex: only partially multiplexed cars
On 406s, the switchoff between multiplex and part-mux happended somewhere between 05/2001 and 07/2001.
If your car has the "thinner" stalks it is pre-multiplex, if it has the "fatter", more modern ones it full mux and has the COM2000 system.
COM2000 is the assembly of indicators, lights and such stalks behind the steering wheel. While being more pleasant looking and a little more powerful, the COM2000 is also more prone to breaking than the pre-multiplex system.
A multiplex system also offers more configuration possibilities inside the BSI, by using PP2000. For example you can activate / deactivate auto lights, power-after-shutdown for windows, beeps and such stuff.
When remapping there is no difference.
