hi there, i had an issue as above and resolved it simply - burning out the filter passively,
but not so quickly- first of all you have to check if your difference pressure sensor is running correctly, these named "kavlico'' are useless- they just get out of order often.
if that diff press sensor is OKAY, then go to step 2 below
try to make a full static burnout using your diagnostic software, see if it works, if not - the filter is stuck 4 good,
then 3 options may resolve the problem, putting a new dpf, cleaning the ol one using chimney cleaner, or cut out that stuff and reprogram your edc16 for absence of dpf, but (don`t know where you from, i suppose your`e british) then you can say good bye to MOT pass certificate due to particle content in exhaust gases. Reassuming - there are few things to check on your drive pal.
greetings from poland

I bought a 2.4 20v with 158300km on the clock and had the same problem

I tried a forced regeneration with MultiEcuScan (licensed) but the clogging just went from 60% to 90% :o

Taking the filter off (replacing it with a straight tube) resulted in MASSIVE clouds of smoke

And when I say MASSIVE, I mean MASSIVE :!:

I then closed the EGR valve with the blanking plates and almost all of the smoke went away ;)

That's what probably killed the DPF, there was too much smoke coming in and it couldn't cope with it. So if I had the filter replaced without checking other causes first, I would have just burned (better said, smoked) a lot of money

That was very interesting, an open egr should result in lack of power what is the same symptom of clogged dpf. It is very confusing when not DTC diagnosed.
Maybe there is a possibility of clean your dpf using h2so4 (if not stuck for good obviously)? I had a lot of that much choked dpf filters and have succesfully cleaned it out using a chimney cleaner for example.

I read on a website that any DIY attempt of cleaning the DPF would result in disaster since no chemical agent can "melt" char

http://www.reteimprese.it/com_A71585B7017 (it's in italian but Google is your friend...)

Anyway that's a professional cleaning service, so I wouldn't take their opinion for granted...

Iv`e read that article, it was curious. It makes some sense in chemical meaning because carbon isn`t really significantly reacting with sulfuric acid, that`s true. Its hard structure seems to be untouchable for acids and any attempt of dissolve. Here is why only high temperature untie that type of contamination. Cleaning attempts can destroy the construction of filter without doubt but it depends on stuck level and cleaning method. Besides carbon there is a lot of other compounds sticked to that dirt coat. I`m convinced that they can be easily moved out by concentrated anionic surfactants that contain any fireplace cleaner, increasing clearance betwen monolith cells, even if its lowered only by 4g/cm2 it gets much more flow, from there is a chance to get burned the rest of carbon coat on the car for example.

what about heating it in an oven (or fire :shh: ) and then blasting compressed air through it? (nevermind the ungodly cloud of soot that would come out...)
