Tuning boxes interupt the signal between the ECU and the sensors. They alter the signal (lower or rise) and send it to the ECU. The ecu thinks that there is not enough pressure in the rail and closes the rail pressure valve to compensate. When you have higher pressure and same injetion time you can inject more fuel = more power. Fooling the ecu this way is not a good thing to do.

In English the "safe mode" is also called "limp mode", it may help you in the future if you are looking for how to solve a limp mode problem. ;) ;)

Limp is not the same that safe-mode, many PSA's cut-off the engine when some value are achevied... (been there, done that ;) )
I have a few obd scanner, amoung then the Diagbox.
