Looking to get started tuning and don't know the basics

Can someone please direct me towards a tutorial on what is needed to tune say my 2002 Celica GT? I have an elm 327 interface cable coming but was reluctant to buy the TOAD software until I heard from some forum members about that particular package.

Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.
