MPPS v13, newby advice

Hi all, I have a Vectra 1.9tdci 150 automatic and I will be removing the DPF from the exhaust then deleting the DPF and EGR (using a egr blanking plate).
My MPPS V13 cable and software is on its way and i'm now trying to soak up as much info as I can and would appreciate advice from you guys very much. I've just formatted a laptop and installed Windows XP as a dedicated programming machine with no other software on there. My question is, what is the process using the software, where would I get a decent file to upload onto the vectra ecu? I'm looking for good economy, deleted DPF and deleted EGR and no power increase.

Hello! Noticed you're in wakefield, I'm in Dewsbury so good to see someome local(ish) on the board.

Anyway, to answer the question, programming the car as you know really is just the surface of the job, so getting a file to program the vehicle will either involve writing the file yourself (reverse engineering the file) or getting someone to provide a file (though this probably won't be for free as a lot of the main tools used for doing the dpf removal aren't free either)

Thanks for your reply. I'm new to this and just trying to understand as much as I can. Does the MPPS cable download my existing ecu map onto the laptop and then I send the file to a remapper to be remapped for a price, then I upload the new map to the ecu with the MPPS cable from the laptop? Or do I need to get hold of an original map from someone and they remap that file and I upload that onto my ECU?

You've essentially got it, you download the file using the programming tool, which will give you either a full readout of the ecu or a partial readout, depending on the type of ecu fitted and what it supports which will *usually cover the areas needed for modification.

Not all ecu types support full read, some do but only accept a partial write etc. It's complex with few rules so you learn on a case by case basis.

Once you've read the ecu, it's up to you how you get the file modified, some tuners will insist you come to them, some might be willing to sell you files or you might opt to do your own. once you've got a modified file though writing is just the reverse of reading. Providing it all goes okay.... if not, it can vary from 'try again' to visiting a tuner anyway with a sheepish expression on your face.

*I say usually because some cars give readouts that don't cover everything needed for tuning, some vauxhalls ive heard of this happening in which case for MPC processors a bdm tool to force a full read on bench might be more appropriate.

I rate the MPPS very highly but I use the genuine one, I do beleive some vauxhalls can be a bit funny with the OBD read areas though.

If I opted to do my own, i.e delete the egr and dpf functions from the ecu, do you think I could learn to do this or does it take years? I've got no problem with the physical removal of the filter in the exhaust having been a semi skilled mechanic in the past but i'm not sure about using WinOLS and identifying then changing the nessessary codes. Just how hard is it?
I'd certainly be prepared to give it a go if I knew which areas of code to edit correctly.

I started 7 years ago after a main tuner refused to do my ecu because it involved 'soldering', i started commercially about 4 years ago, and i've still barely scratched the surface in a lot of areas :lol:

if thats any indication! Though it might be a bit biased because I do a lot of research and development on a relatively narrow band of ecu's.

I've always said, and it's not to raise money, but just as general genuine advice that if the end result is to be tuned/etc and the enjoyment is gained from driving the car at the end then its easier to just have it done. Whereas if the process of development is where the fun is found, then it might be worth the time investment in experimenting etc.

You can probably figure out quite quickly with a bit of research how to do a dpf off on any given car though. It'l just be different for pretty much any car you do so there's a LOT of work involved if you wanted to do any more than that. What I'm basically saying is, it's generally a full-time hobby. :angel:

My interest is to remove the dpf and egr by deleting them in the ecu, tuning the car for more BHP or performance is not my objective. If someone can take my file and do this 100% successfully for a good price then thats a good option. If I could learn to identify and edit the correct codes in WinOPS myself 100% successfully then that is also an option. It boils down to the forum members at the end of the day I suppose and whether they are willing to learn me what is needed. The first option of paying for a service will probably be my best bet just in case a screw things up.
