What equipment do I need to start on a remap?

Postby hassy786 » Tue Aug 09, 2016 9:17 pm

Hi,

I have a Golf MK5 1.9 TDI and I had gotten it remapped a few days ago from 105 BHP to "Around" 150 BHP - 160 BHP. The guys I got it done from charged a low price compared to the big professional companies who would have charged £300. This was just a generic remap and took around 40minutes to perform. It didnt seem to make much difference at all after the remap and after several tries, he gave up and gave me a full refund and put it back to stock.... Now, I want to remap my own car and need equipment to buy. I do not want to mess with the ECU file therefore I will be paying a company to send me a copy of their already modified file. I will just be reading/writting to the ECU but I do not know what equipment I need. I have seen some ebay equipment for like £15 which is a cable that connects to the OBD port and then the other side to a laptop and you also get a CD with it, is that all I need or is it more complex than that?

I do have quite a bit of knowledge on IT itself and would be able to perform it but I would not touch the ECU file itself as I wouldnt know what to change therefore I have left that for a professional. Please help me find the equipment I need to remap my car. Does a remap kit really only cost £15 from ebay or am I missing something?

Thanks.

Would something like this work?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MPPS-V16-ECU- ... 2233093293

I am aware that this tool does not come with any modified ECU files so you either create them using the original ECU file or get somebody else to do it but will the tool itself be ideal to use to read and write to the ECU without causing any problems?

Thanks.

it depends on what cars you want to do mate, some of the newer cars needs bootmode to download reload any maps.

The car I wanted to remap was written in the description.. It is a Golf MK5 1.9 TDI 2004 BKC Engine.. The ECU is Bosch EDC15. Thats the first car I want to remap which is my own. I dont think there will be any more to remap for a while till I get another car any way so not bothered about what cars it allows me to remap. Just looking at all the remap kits .. There is a K2000 or MPPS but I dont know what is better to go for.. Yes there is Kess or Alientech etc but those are waay out of my budget to just remap 1 car. Would a cheap MPPS or K2000 work to remap my Golf MK5?

For EDC15 I find (genuine!) MPPS to be the most convenient solution. You will then need a checksummed tuned file to flash to your car. Lots of software available to edit files and correct checksums - winOLS, EDCsuite and many others. Having all the right kit is not cheap. If you just want your car to be tuned, I'd recommend paying for a professional remap. If you want to do the tuning yourself, I'd get friendly with someone with some genuine tools and see if they will read and write your tuned files to your car.
