Where to start?

Postby Clockwork » Sat Feb 09, 2019 4:54 pm

I'm very new to all this and could use a bit of help please

So, I want to teach myself over time and then start doing the odd map on the side for extra beer tokens and possibly move over to doing it for a living eventually

I'm now the owner of a Kess master setup but software's got me a bit stumped at the moment, I've been trying to get whatever I can for free to "play with" for now and see how I go. However, titanium seemed a bit lacking - which was a shame as it looked a bit easier to use. winols looks very professional but having to get damos all the time might be a pain, I don't really want to throw much more money at it until I'm sure I want to go further. Enginuity looked good online but I can't get it to work at the moment.

Can anyone make a suggestion of a good starting point please? I think, while I'm learning, I'd like to work on a remap for my discovery tdv6. including egr delete (it's euro 4) to give myself a project and I'll get something out of it in the end even if I scrap the whole idea.

Start by reading guides on this forum and posting file from your car...if you want to learn forget titanium and start learning to work with winols

Thankyou :thumbup: That's about as much as I'd gathered so far. The only guide I'd found was "so you want to get into remapping cars", can anyone point me in the direction of some more please?

A good system to learn is edc15(old vw cars.) There's plenty of info around and you can find original files everywhere and use something like edcsuite to adjust the maps.

A bit of an update;

I've read the file successfully and used a program to disable the egr. I then needed to use titanium to correct the checksum as I couldn't find the file winOLS saved when I used that...

I found a damos that worked but so far I can't figure any maps out; their names don't make much sense to me and their contents don't seem very useful either; one map (I can't remember what) looked to be of use tuning-wise but the x axis values were all 3775 or similar and the y axis were all zero! I'm a bit stumped with it all at the moment.

I'll post the original file up tomorrow, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for the suggestions so far chaps

Or that was the plan at least! I've read the file with kess but it doesn't have a file type after it: no .bin/.ols/.exe etc. WinOLS opens it and so does ecm but on here it says file type's no good - how do I convert it?

Can you guys work with me on it once I've managed to upload it please? - find the first map you'd change, explain why it's first and how to find it and then what to change and why? I think I'd learn well from that method and be getting somewhere at the same time

I paid to have this file done for me, as much as anything so that I could compare new vs original. I've also gone the same route with my brother's audi 1.8tfsi. Neither gave a huge change in performance but something I've noticed when viewing the changes;

Both new maps have quite a few double lines (in 2D mode) as though the original AND the changed parts are there; is that normal, undesirable, bad? I wonder if it's typical of a map that's been changed with ECM?

Is there something I can do that'll clean the new map up and possibly improve the results?

To answer my own question: it seems winOLS does that so you can see the differences. When the two (old and new) aren't linked, or only one is open, there is no second line.
