STFT & LTFT?? Can it show up a poor remap?

Postby Mr H » Thu Jan 14, 2021 2:23 pm

Firstly I would like to apologise as my knowledge on remapping is limited and I just wanted some basic advice. I thought what better place to come than a tuning forum. Please don’t beat me up too much with the basic questions! I’m new and this is my first post, I have a keen interest in cars and recently more so tuning. I’m fascinated by the technical aspects, however this got me thinking about how good the MAP is on my own car??

Here it goes.

I had my car remapped sometime ago and I’ve noticed a few small changes, gladly in Performance, but also some other areas. It’s these areas where I wanted to ask some questions. I have a Porsche 997.1 3.8s (N/A) with a cold air induction kit, BMC air filter, 200 cell Xpipe and headers. I also have a new plenum (Diverter pipe) and increased throttle body from 74mm to 82mm. Just so you know I wasn’t looking for gains just improved drivability which I have. On the Dyno I saw increases across the whole BHP/Ttq. 20hp/20trq. The torque improved across the range. The HP was similar low down but improved as the RPM increased. My main question is around the STFT and LTFT. I have a few diagnostic tools where a can read data from the car.

Do STFT and LTFT show up a poor map?
Does the LTFT take an average across the whole fuel trim chart taking into account all different loads and rpm? Or just one area?
Could I record this data over different driving loads and speeds and use this a a basic guide to see if the MAP is “Generally ok”

As I fitted a bigger throttle body and induction pipe I was told the MAF needed rescaling? The MAF housing is the same but the other parts increased in size? Is rescaling the MAF true/correct?

Before the throttle body was fitted the MAF speed was 5g/s . When the 82m throttle body was fitted the MAF dropped to 4.5 g/s. After the remap it is now at 5.75 g/s? Is this to do with the rescaling? Or a small increase in idle speed of 100rpm?

I have also noticed my idle has gone from 700rpm to 800rpm? Car idles the best it’s ever idled. Now its 100 rpm more would that explain my MAF increase?

I was told that the performance may improve further as the ECU carries out learning over time. I’m guessing this is the LTFT ?? Once all the fuel trim tables are populated can you see better performance or fuel economy? Or is the MAP the MAP?

When at high rpm and decelerating I get more pops than before. I’m not particularly bothered about this but I just wondered if they would become less once the LTFT are populated? Or is it something I should be concerned about? I’m only talking small crackles, not back fires!

Again, apologies in advance, I just want to somehow check with basic tools my overall MAP isn’t impacting the car with lean/rich conditions.
