Hybrid turbo adaptation problems

Postby tommix » Sat Feb 20, 2021 11:20 pm

Hi all. My turbo was damaged in accident when car lost 85% of oil and turbo had no oil.
Car Alfa Romeo 159 2.0 ecu EDC1639

Went to reputable local turbo company (TurboSystems), got Hybrid.
The problem:

Stock turbo can boost to 1.8-1.9Bar. Now with hybrid i cant even get 1.6Bar. Company said they adjusted actuator to factory specs.
So i modified VNT maps (n75 i guess it also called). made 15% increase in all mid [till 3500] rpm areas from 25mm3 IQ till max IQ.

It's now spools faster but still cant reach 1.6Bar.. For reference car was sooo not responsive that from 1700 rpm to 3100rpm it's 13seconds to reach 3100rpm from 1700.

I read many places and for my understanding when you get Hybrid you should be able to get at least stock Boost with no mods in ecu.
I increased VNT maps 15% and still not getting stock boost. So is it normal situation? or company calibrated incorrectly turbo vnt actuator? I really doubt i have to make 20% changes to VNT map. Stock car 170HP and new turbo should get 230HP. SO hybrid turbo is not that bigger..they for some reason refused to tell me exact dimensions of components.

It was remaped. then i reset VNT maps and SOI maps. SOI helped, spools faster. I had changed then a lot with stock turbo.
Yes that's what im trying to understand-is this turbo company problem or soft. IMO it's turbo problem. So far everything points to turbo. If i cant even reach 1.6Bar of boost while stock gives 1.85Bar. Car feels like have no turbo at all.

I've attached original bin. Anyway it's not software issue. THE ONLY thing that may be software issue is PID control in this engine hard to find some maps because damos of edc16c39 is different than of this engine. many maps do not match, this engine sometimes have more maps. Different axies values and so on. But so far i know all maps i need except for PID.

Also i written flash so many times-im afraid ecu will block further writes so i'm not in a position to test many changes and so on. Dont want to sound rude but i only need help if you know what you are doing.Car suffered oil shortage and engine already makes some new noises...dont want to test unreadable mods.

IMO main VNT map is @ 1F1014.
Added map.. values are 15% higher... still cant get stock boost

Needed 7 seconds in 4th gear gas pedal 100%, 15% VNT map change to boost from 0,4Bar to 1,6Bar

its look like on logs that vnt selenoid opens and closes sometimes.

i think maybe the actuator is set to too loose, you can try if you can reach, i got 1.6 giulietta same placed turbos but dont remember which side the actuator is.

it should be pushing at least 1.8-1.9 bars again.

the other scenario is material that company used in that turbo, if they are too heavy, turbo can have less ability about boosting

Also if you didnt done after rebuild parts after crash, try to clean map and maf sensors please :) it can be helpful sometimes

Thanks for your input. I think actuator is calibrated ok. I logged what mm move ecu wants and what mm move ecu registers-it's almost perfect match. SO actuator is ok i guess. Problem would be PID control. I only when did slow, cruize tests in 4th gear noticed that my boost in fact is higher then asked for. About 100-200mBar higher. So VNT maps do work but as many knows only when you cruizing, in more quick scenarios PID control is used. And i dont know how to correct it or what exact maps change. Also this would give your noticed actuator jumps...

Anyway my engine is damaged... oil leak killed not only turbo [thats why i replaced to hybrid] but engine as well. Will go to the service for inspection and repair.

Thank you for your work. I looked at your file. I liked it. Because i saw no stupid values, like other people like to do.. Everything was safely done. But i did not notice any change that i've not be done already. All maps were changed the same that is mine. Well i have changed much more maps because i have dpf delete, egr delete, post injection deletes, glow plugs to glow longer and so on.
As i wrote above replay - this will be PID control problem. Your changes is smaller then mine... so i doubt it will have bigger effect.
But im VERY grateful! Tuning people for some reason are very silent.. hate to tell anything.. like it will stole their life savings :D
