Depends od the ECU.
The best backup equipment you should have is BDM and EPROM programer.

for old edc15 without problem to reaad with galleto or mpps by obd.
after that you can recover with desoldering 29f400 and program directly with file by obd !
on edc 16 is difficult better way remove ecu put on bench read by bdm all mpc+flash+eeprom and you are save now because if you kill the ecu you can finde used and clone it.

It is not always the issue on flasher, if you interrupt the process, or voltage deviation and so on.
Colgate has the point.

I have read that some guys have succeed repair few ecu:s with mpps. Those ecu:s was locked when writing fails with galletto. No need desoldering.

When you do repair flashing with mpps in broken ecu you must do it by bench flashing and writing in recovery mode. Also ECU must be in boot mode.

Here is web site where you can find information to ecu pinouts and boot pins.
